SQ2SQ charity cycle challenge team bikes are chosen with the assistance of Wight Mountain, Newport

The Square to Square chairty cycle challenge team, with the assistance and advice of Will and Russ at Wight Mountain, Newport, have chosen the bikes for the charity cycle challenge 2008.

BH Bikes Volan Sport 9V L22M

The BH Bikes Volan Sport 9V L22M, has been chosen as a replacement to the Scott P3 2008, as being the best choice of price, availability, reliability and suitability for the training and event ride of the challenge, with each cyclist expecting to have to cover approximately 1,400 miles for the challenge from St Thomas’ Square, Newport, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom to the Vatican Square, Italy.

BH Bikes are one of the largest manufacturers in Europe, with the bikes built in Spain and are now becoming available in the United Kingdom.

BH Bikes have recently become available on the Isle of Wight exclusively at Wight Mountain, Newport, Isle of Wight.

The team would like to thanks BH Bikes, BH Bikes UK Distributors (Toby 07977 157 223 or Dale O’Connor 07788 661 044) and Wight Mountain for their support for the challenge.

The bikes are expected to be delivered in November and December 2007 so tha the team can get used to the bikes during their training sessions in prepration for the challenge.

Rosie Barnard completes the Great South Run 2007 for the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008

Rosie Barnard, Employee Well-being Manager, Isle of Wight Council, successfully completed the Great South Run 2007 in aid of the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008.

Rosie managed to completed the Great South Run on Sunday 28th October 2007 and managed to raise £500, which she kindly donated to the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008.

Rosie is involved in assisting the team in prepration for the challenge in 2008 and helping with gaining exposure and sponsorship for the event.

The team express their sincere thanks for her efforts and raising the £500 through her efforts in the Great South Run 2007

Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008 Corporate Launch, 31st October 2007

On Wednesday 31st October 2007 the corporate launch for the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008 was held. at the Respiratory Unit of St Mary’s Hospital, Newport Isle of Wightl.

The team and the support crew, the Chief Fire Officer Paul Street, Brigade Manager Giles Lowe, Isle of Wight Councillors, respresentatives of the Wessex Cancer Trust and family and friends.

Anne Snow, lung cancer CNS for St Marys Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight, announced that the target was to raise at least £25,000 for the provision of a thorascope for the diagnosis, treatment and care of Isle of Wght Cancer Patients.

Kelvin Wright, one of the organisers of the Square to Square Charitty Cycle Challenge 2008, gave further details of the challenge the team would be undertaking in September 2008; with each cyclist covering the 1,400 miles in 14 days from St Thomas’ Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to the Vatican Square, Italy.

Kelvin revealed initial details of plans to involve all middle school pupils in the ‘Go Ride’ scheme (more details soon), which will allow pupils 9-14 years old to get involved in cycling and the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008.

Kelvin informed those at the launch that if the initial target of £25,000 was exceeded that more equipment would be funded from the funds raised by the challenge.

A cancer patient, currently undergoing the treatment on the mainland using the equipment that the team would like to fund to save the travelling for the patients, family and friends, gave an emotional speech on the need for the equipment.

The team would like to express their sincere thanks to this individual for her courage in making the speecd and in doing so giving the team a perspective and meaning for the challenge that lies ahead for them.

Corporate sponsorship for the team was forthcoming from various local and national companies; more details will be published soon.

The team are still looking for more corporate and individual sponsors. Sponsors are being invited to buy a square on the team’s drill tops and t-shirts; with the square to the front of the tops at £300, whilst a sleeve at £500. You can contact us here for more information.

Fundraising car wash held on Saturday 3 November 2007 raises £1555 for the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008

A fundraising car wash, held on Saturday 3 November 2007, at Newport Fire Station, Newport, Isle of Wight, raises £1555.15 for the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008.

Members of the team, firefighters from Green Watch, Fire Control Centre staff, Wessex Cancer Trust volunteers, family and friends completed five hours of car washing and raised an impressive £1555.15 for the cycle challenge.

The total raised, as at 7 November 2007, for the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge now stands at £6,236.94.

Corporate sponsors also came forward and there will be more details soon.

The team would like to thanks all those that took part in the car wash, particularly Green Watch for all their hardwork and suport for the challenge, the very wet Teresa and of course all those who had their cars washed and kindly donated to the challenge.
