SQ2SQ 2011 Isle of Wight UK to Gibraltar – Challenge Complete
The SQ2SQ 2011 Team successfully completed their endurance challenge of cycling 1,457miles/2,345km (for each cyclist) in 14 consecutive days from St Thomas’ Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to Casemates Square, Gibraltar through France, over the Pyrenees Mountains, through Spain to Gibraltar at 2pm on Saturday 15 October 2011.
The third triennial SQ2SQ charity cycle challenge involved each of the seven cyclists covering the 1,457 miles/2,345km each over the 14 consecutive days, with no rest days. The event requires each cyclist to cover the average 100 miles per day without rest days. It is not a relay event, but rather each cyclist covers the mileage day after day.
The seven cyclists and five support crew reached the 1,000 mile/1,609km at 11am on Day 9 of the challenge.
The highest distance covered in one day of the challenge was 148 miles/238 km on Day 2 through France.
The challenge saw the cyclists achieve the event without any serious injuries, although several of the cyclists experienced severe pain in joint or other areas of the body during the endurance cycling challenge.
The fundraising for the associated SQ2SQ 2011 Appeal, raising funds for Barely Born Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, St Mary’s Hospital and Isle of Wight Young Carers continues through to the end of February 2012.
Images and further statistics for the daily mileage will be available over the new few days when the Team return to the U.K..
