Challenges

We are a group of firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service who arrange and hope to complete cycling challenges from various town/city squares to other town/city square abroad.

Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge was created by Brian McCranor in 2004, prior to his retirement from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. As at 2008 the challenges have raised £86,500 for charity.

Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenges take place every three years.

In 2005 a team cycled 1,004 miles (each cyclist completing 1,004 miles) from from St Thomas’ Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to The Old Town Square, Prague, Czech Republic during the 14 consecutive day challenge.

The team raised £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer, Isle of Wight Kidney Patients Association and the National Fire Services Benevolent Fund.

In 2008 a team completed the SQ2SQ Charity Cycle Challenge 2008 -  a cycling challenge from St Thomas’ Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to The Vatican Square, Vatican, Italy, 1,488 miles in 15 days. The Team raised £76,500 for Isle of Wight cancer patients.

In 2011 a team will complete SQ2SQ Charity Cycle Challenge 2011 – cycling challenge from St Thomas’ Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to Casemates Square, Gibraltar, 1,400 miles/2,250km in 14 consecutive days.
