Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008 Corporate Launch, 31st October 2007
On Wednesday 31st October 2007 the corporate launch for the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008 was held. at the Respiratory Unit of St Mary's Hospital, Newport Isle of Wightl.
The team and the support crew, the Chief Fire Officer Paul Street, Brigade Manager Giles Lowe, Isle of Wight Councillors, respresentatives of the Wessex Cancer Trust and family and friends.
Anne Snow, lung cancer CNS for St Marys Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight, announced that the target was to raise at least £25,000 for the provision of a thorascope for the diagnosis, treatment and care of Isle of Wght Cancer Patients.
Kelvin Wright, one of the organisers of the Square to Square Charitty Cycle Challenge 2008, gave further details of the challenge the team would be undertaking in September 2008; with each cyclist covering the 1,400 miles in 14 days from St Thomas' Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to the Vatican Square, Italy.
Kelvin revealed initial details of plans to involve all middle school pupils in the 'Go Ride' scheme (more details soon), which will allow pupils 9-14 years old to get involved in cycling and the Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge 2008.
Kelvin informed those at the launch that if the initial target of £25,000 was exceeded that more equipment would be funded from the funds raised by the challenge.
A cancer patient, currently undergoing the treatment on the mainland using the equipment that the team would like to fund to save the travelling for the patients, family and friends, gave an emotional speech on the need for the equipment.
The team would like to express their sincere thanks to this individual for her courage in making the speecd and in doing so giving the team a perspective and meaning for the challenge that lies ahead for them.
Corporate sponsorship for the team was forthcoming from various local and national companies; more details will be published soon.
The team are still looking for more corporate and individual sponsors. Sponsors are being invited to buy a square on the team's drill tops and t-shirts; with the square to the front of the tops at £300, whilst a sleeve at £500. You can contact us here for more information.
